A Cheap Man’s Guide to Direct Mail: Stamps, Envelopes and Your Email List

Even in today’s time, businesses spend many weeks, days and hours in meetings and Corporate Team Building events to figure out the best form of promotion for their company only to figure out that direct mail is still the highest converting form of advertising. And, despite the fact that people look down on junk mail, this method still results in hundreds of conversions every day. In fact, some might argue direct mail is even more effective than email marketing, because most people will at least look at their junk mail, even if it’s for a few seconds. With email ads most people don’t even give it a chance as it goes straight into the junk bin.

However, getting started with a direct mail campaign can be really expensive, especially if you use an ad agency. Expect to pay several thousand dollars just to mail out a few hundred ads. Such prices can really be disheartening, especially if you’re operating on a low budget.

Doing things on your own isn’t always easy either– at least if you don’t have a list of prospects. If this is the case, you’ll have to spend thousands trying to get legitimate addresses. To get a better understanding, consider the fact that DirectMail.com charges over £2 million pounds for 2 million (or so) addresses.

Of course, you could still work with DirectMail.com if you’re willing to advertise to a few dozen at a time. Yet, if you really want results you probably should mail at least 1,000 respondents. But how can you do this if most direct mail lists cost too much money?

One of the best methods involves combining email marketing with direct mail advertising. What you would do is set up a typical email campaign site, where respondents must give you their email in order to receive a free gift. However, instead of sending an e-book or newsletter through virtual means, you will want to send it to their physical address.

And don’t worry about money. If your free incentive is an e-book, you could record it and put it on a DVD. This would be cheaper than printing out 50 pages of info. Plus, the format is much more interesting to recipients as most Internet marketers go for the e-book.

Anyway, after your recipient receives their gift, send them direct mail ads, (assuming they authorized you to do so). If your money is low, you can always send using regular stamps and envelopes. In fact, if you order your stamps online, you can even get them at a discount.
